Restaurant Review: Ninja New York
For those daring folk interested in a Ninja adventure, an evening trip to Ninja New York is essential. As one of Tribeca's most original themed subterranean eateries, Ninja is situated in a cave-like lair, combining Japanese culinary mastery with a flair for the dramatic- and the dangerous. Modeled after Ninja castles of feudal times, visitors step through dark maze-like passageways to reach intimately secluded dining areas and private dojo-style rooms. Just be wary of warriors lurking in the corridors waiting to assail unwary travelers.
Guests attended to by ninja-attired servers browse through ancient-looking scrolls to select a weapon of choice from one of the venue's fresh and reasonably-priced cocktails. A round of delectable concoctions flavored with Eastern-inspired ingredients like ginger, dry sake and lychee, is followed by a delicious selection of artfully prepared Japanese favorites with a contemporary twist. Patrons enjoy spectacular displays of flaming dishes seared and garnished before their eyes, as servers role-play with humorous ninja-quips. Most amusingly, guests can expect delightfully surprising interruptions from Ninja assassins emerging from hidden wall panels, brandishing Katana blades. Startled shrieks followed by merry laughter can be heard from other patrons caught unaware. Most notably, although the atmosphere and play-acting inspire lively conversation and positive vibes among groups, the intimacy of the private rooms and seating arrangements offers a cozy, yet entertaining, experience for romantically-inclined guests as well.
Satisfied patrons finish the night off with a personal magic show by a skilled "Ninjician" that will them scratching their heads in amazement. How did he do that? Was it the excess of freshly muddled cocktails? Or just another magical night at Ninja.
